Register as a Volunteer to win a bike!!
Did you know that over 500 volunteers will assist you in this year’s Around the Bay in a Day?
GET YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY INVOLVED
There are still some fantastic positions available on the day, and if you have any friends or family that might be interested in helping you ride around the bay, please tell them to register here.
By registering as a Volunteer in this year’s event before 29 August, you’ll go into the draw to win a TREK 7.3 FX Road Bike (valued at $799) thanks to Rapido Cycles.
What bike can you ride ATB on?
For those riding the 210km or 250km challenge, some of you could be looking at around 12 hours in the saddle. Considering this, the most important thing is that you are comfortable and correctly set up on your bike. Around the Bay can be done on any bike, but keep in mind that you will have an easier ride if you use a bike built specifically for the purpose, i.e. a road bike or touring bike.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a road bike, you can modify mountain bikes and hybrids for the event. One of the best and easiest things to do is put on slick tyres that do not have any tread. This will enable the tyre to roll with less resistance, which will make it easier on the legs!
Here's some basic information on
Importance of Knicks
Apart from your bike, the second most important thing on endurance rides is your clothing – just ask any serious road cyclists.
For your ride around the bay select a chamois that will go the distance. Softer, less dense foams are more comfortable while firmer more dense foams are required for longer distances. The SCODY Italian made elite chamois used in the 2008 Around The Bay in a Day knicks is designed for the distance.
The cover fabric used on the elite chamois is a breathable, moisture wicking, highly elastic 100% polyester fabric made from bioactive thread which stretches in all directions to enhance body movement.
A thin jersey layer covers the back of the foams to protect and enhance the durability of the chamois. The chamois is pre-shaped to enhance the fit, seamless to minimise friction and has differentiated levels to suit your anatomy.
For more information check out www.scody.com.au for custom clothing for all sports disciplines and a full range of corporate merchandise.
Order now to break knicks in!!!
You only have a few weeks left to finalise your team clothing. SCODY has advised the following deadlines for orders of team clothing:

Don’t forget to Get Sponsored for The Smith Family!
100% of your registration fee has gone directly to Bicycle Victoria to stage this fantastic event and to campaigns to get More People Cycling More Often. The only way The Smith Family generates funds is through riders and teams taking on the fundraising challenge.
Did you know that out of 14,000 riders who rode in 2007, only 14% fundraised?? This small committed group of corporate teams, community cycling groups and individuals raised over $500,000. We would love to see many more riders fundraising – could you imagine how much we could raise if everyone asked their friends, family and colleagues to sponsor them??
All riders who raise $250 or more for The Smith Family will go into the draw to win a weekend away for 4 people to Lake Taupo, New Zealand (Flights, accommodation and entry into Lake Taupo Cycling Challenge for 4 people included - November 2009)

Do I Need a Structured Training Plan?
Some people thrive on a structured training program. They believe it's the only way they keep themselves motivated and to improve their cycling. Others purely ride because just being on a bike is enough to keep them going.
Here's a suggested training program guide to give you a head start.
If you need a more structured training program, Rob Crowe - Former Road Cycling Olympian, cycling coach and Director of Ridewiser can provide some helpful information in getting started.
Or perhaps you have a training question, just "Ask Rob"
Want a way to remember the day?
All Bicycle Victoria members will receive a certificate of completion upon finishing Around the Bay in a Day. Stay tuned for where you can pick these up.

Team Profile "In the hot seat"
Bendigo Fire Station are back riding the ATB this year for the third time. 15 fire fighters are part of the team and are getting sponsored to raise money for The Smith Family. “It’s a good challenge and you get to ride and meet people from different backgrounds and towns and cities” Officer Mick Lavery said. The team meets up at the station for regular training on their bikes and head out in different routes each time. Courtesy of Bendigo Advertiser
