Dear
With only three days left to accept entries ( except 50km registration) it is very exciting to see the total number of participants hit an all-time record - over 15,500! Which means there are lots of riders out there training.
While you are training, we strongly urge you to practice good riding etiquette to look after yourself and your fellow riders while out on the roads.
Take care in the final weeks leading up to the ride. Eat your greens, drink lots (of water), practice safe cycling etiquette, train hard and have fun!

Training tips
- Ensure you’re always looking ahead. You don’t know what may be coming up.
- When you are in a group, always pass on messages about upcoming obstacles or what the movements of the group are. Shout out the messages if you need to.
- If you are inexperienced in riding in a big group, don’t ride too close to other riders and never overlap your wheel. Don’t be offended if a group asks you to leave, riding in a group is all about trust and enjoyment - you wouldn’t join a group of unknown people at the pub without being invited!
- Training by riding to work is great use of time. Register as a participant or a workplace coordinator on National Ride to Work Day to join in all the fun and win great prizes

On the Day tips
- Ensure that you have your emergency numbers written on your bib, there is a space on the back of your bibs for you to fill the numbers out
- Ensure that you are wearing appropriate clothing for the weather, the morning may be cold and damp but like last year, it may be very hot throughout the day
- Ensure that your intake of fluids is suitable to the weather on the day
- Be prepared for all types of weather conditions

Event Jersey Exchange policy
In order to have your jersey exchanged, you must return your jersey to Bicycle Victoria unworn with the original tags in place.
You then have three options in order to receive your jersey.
1. You can exchange your jersey at the Bicycle Victoria stand in the GO Bike Expo (17 - 19 October) in Alexandra Gardens.
2. You can come into Bicycle Victoria offices, which are on level 10, 446 Collins Street, Melbourne.
3. We can post out a replacement jersey once we have received your original jersey.
Hydrate with Powerade No Sugar
The weather’s starting to warm up. Don’t forget good hydration with Powerade No Sugar will help you get through your training session more effectively.
Just because you don’t see or feel your sweat much doesn’t mean you don’t need to drink. Use your training sessions to measure your sweat losses by weighing yourself before and after the session. Then set up a plan which will allow you to drink enough to match this sweat loss during your event. This will help you race harder for longer.

Preparing your bike for Transport from Melbourne to Sorrento
Buses will leave St Kilda Road from 5am onwards, with the last bus expected to leave at approximately 6am. The buses will be leaving from the Bus Zone, opposite the Arts Centre on the southbound side of St Kilda Road (Mel 2F H7).
Although it is not essential, you may wish to pre-pack your bike in a disposable (cardboard) bike box. All bikes will need to have both pedals removed (this is to protect other bikes when packing them onto the trucks), and handlebars turned parallel to the bike. Please remove any water bottles, lights or other removable objects, as they may dislodge in transit. There will be Volunteer Riding Marshals at Sorrento to help put pedals back on firmly.
Please Note: We recommend that you loosen up your pedals and head stem prior to arriving, as this will speed up the loading progress and make it easier on the day.
Bookings for this service are available until Friday 3 October
Get Sponsored for The Smith Family
As of today, riders have raised $80,108.50 for The Smith Family’s Learning for Life suite of education programs, a great start but there is still a long way to go to reaching this years fundraising target of $600,000. Don’t forget that none of your registration fee comes to The Smith Family so you do need to go that extra mile and ask friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you.
It’s easy to get sponsored. You can be sponsored online at www.thesmithfamily.com.au/atbsponsoronline - all you or your sponsors need to do is type in your first name, surname or bib number and away you go.
If you prefer the old fashioned hand fundraising form which you can take around and ask for sponsorship then please download here and away you go.
Don’t forget all riders who raise $250 or more for The Smith Family will go into the draw to win four return economy tickets to Lake Taupo, New Zealand to participate in the Lake Taupo cycling challenge in November 2009 (flights, accommodation and entry into the Lake Taupo cycling challenge included)
Please help us reach $600,000 so we can help 1600 disadvantaged Aussie kids reach their potential.
Thank you

Rider Identification Bibs
Each Rider on the Aviva Investors Around the Bay in a Day® - Get Sponsored for The Smith Family will receive 2 Rider Identification Bibs with 8 small safety pins for attachment to the front and back of your jersey.
Q: Do I have to wear the Rider Identification Bibs?
A: Yes – this will identify you as part of the Ride. The Rider Identification Bib will have an individual number and will be coloured depending on the event option that you have selected. Please make sure you are wearing the correct Rider Identification Bib, or you will not have access to the ferries, lunch, support crew or the Westgate Bridge.
Q. What if I cannot ride, can I give my bib number to someone else to use?
A. No, transfers of registrations closed on Wednesday 17 September. Non-registered riders riding with someone else's bib number will not be covered under our event insurance.

Police Message
Sunrise on Sunday 19 October 2008 is predicted to be at 6.29am. This means that those participating in the 250km and the 210km will require front and rear lights on their bicycles. There will be Police present on the day, so please make sure you come prepared to ride safely.
Why consider Subaru?
Advanced driving technology is a key ingredient of Subaru’s Australian success.
Among the key factors contributing to its reputation:
• Five-star safety – every new Subaru has an independent five-star rating for occupant safety from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
• Pedestrian safety – Subaru designers enhance this with each generation - Impreza has the highest possible four-star pedestrian rating, and Forester the highest rating in its class – three stars.
• Boxer engines – every Subaru has a version of this compact, flat engine, benefiting road holding and safety, thanks to a low centre of gravity. They go under, rather than into, the passenger cabin in heavy frontal collisions.
• Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive – constant drive to all four wheels, enhancing grip and safety.
Be rewarded by Subaru Melbourne simply for choosing to test drive a new vehicle before December 31st 2008. Present a copy of this email as part of your test drive at any one of Subaru Melbourne’s retail showrooms and receive the latest edition of Melbourne Bike Paths and a Pedros Bike Pump (total value of over $60rrp)
