We've reached 10,000 entries and counting. With only 75 days to go, we hope your preparation is well underway.
While training, don't forget to practice the things you will do on the ride. Treat each training ride as a dress rehearsal. Practice taking and using your repair kit, clothing kit and back up items such as a phone and loose change. Practice drinking and eating while riding and communicating with other riders. Practice riding with the group that you plan to ride with on the day. Work out how your group will handle things like stopping at red lights, overtaking other groups and allowing motor vehicles to pass. Above all, enjoy your riding and have fun!
Happy Training!
Sweeping Your Worries Away
A big thanks to Hobsons Bay City Council who have committed to sweeping all parts of the 50km, 210km and 250km ride routes within their municipality.
They will be working closely with Bicycle Victoria in communicating the event to locals and visitors through digital road message boards as well as signs and marshal points.
We are working with other Councils to try and get the entire route swept prior to the event.
'I Enjoyed Putting Smiles on Faces'
Four hundred people get a thrill each year helping you enjoy your ride.
We would like you to ask your friends and family if they would like to participate in the day as a volunteer and join in on the fun.
Confirming your entry, planning the route, organising the start/finish festival, directing you on the route, handing out your lunch and ferry tickets and welcoming you at the finish line are just some of the roles available.
People really enjoy being part of the fun of the event and supporting their friends and family.
Have a look at the route and think of who you know who lives near part of it and ask them to sign up.
If someone signs up to volunteer before 30 August and nominates you as the Rider, you will be entitled to Rider Rewards such as priority access to the ferry, VIP lounge access or both.
Every volunteer receives a uniform and lunch on the day as well as a great communication and support system.
To sign up go to our registration page, or to find out more, please email us or phone Annette on (03) 8636 8831
Navigate the Bay by Google
We’ve plotted indicative routes for this year’s rides on Google Maps so you can check out your route. Once you have selected your ride and clicked on the link, zoom in using the scale on the top left of the map, use the satellite version (button on top right) to get a closer look at the roads you will be following or click on the icons to get more information about the ride.
Give Your Shoulders a Break
For those of you who are riding for a longer duration than you are accustomed to, think about changing your position on the handlebars periodically so that you don't get sore shoulders.
If you haven't started training yet, make sure you have a look at our basic training guide. To get you motivated, why not join a group of people for a beginners or advanced training clinic on Sunday 26 August?
If you have any training questions, read the answers to some common training questions or send us your questions for answering.
'The Best Thing I Have Ever Been Able To Do’
For the first time in the history of Portfolio Partners Around the Bay in a Day, 10 kids from The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program will challenge themselves as they ride 50km over the Westgate Bridge and back!
Many families that The Smith Family work with miss out on opportunities that are easily accessible to others. Participation in the event for these students is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Many of them had never ridden a bike until the lead up to this year’s event!
Thank you to Portfolio Partners who will provide full ‘lycra’ kits to the kids, cover their entry fees as well as food and drink on the day. Latrobe City Council have generously provided bikes and helmets for the kids to use on the day.
These kids will travel from Gippsland to Melbourne for the day which has generated much excitement in what one child has described as ‘the best thing I have ever been able to do’.
Give Aussie kids a flying start - sponsor these kids and other riders online now!
Former Austral Wheel Champion Leads the Way
The Tooheys Grogmonsters are doing the 210km Ride for the fourth year in a row. 14 riders from the small town of Ulverstone in Tasmania and eight riders from Mooloolaba, Queensland, make up this year's team. The group is led by former Austral Wheel Champion Craig Price, who raced in both Australia and Europe and currently coaches a number of young riders.
Team members are from all walks of life from steel workers to accountants, motel owners, butchers, drycleaners, forklift sales mangers, car mechanic, bike shop owners, builders, and unemployed. In the past the team has been predominantly male, however this year some of the wives are doing the 50km Ride for the first time.
Craig says they have a system that helps them enjoy the day. “We start as a group and finish as a group. If a rider gets a puncture, we all stop and if there is a fall, we all stop. We work together and stay as a bunch and at the end you’ll see us enjoying our favourite “frothy”! Enjoy the day – from the Tooheys Grogmonsters.”
You Are What You Eat
We often get questions about what to eat while training and riding. Thanks to
, you can follow the story of typical rider, Dave, as he prepares for the event, or see how Greg Cox answers some common questions. Greg Cox is the Senior Sports Dietitian at the Australian Institute of Sport and is available to answer nutrition questions you may have before the ride.
Design Your Own Jersey
To cater for smaller quantities of jerseys, SCODY offer screen prints on standard jerseys held in stock and also offer fully printed garments in a standard design with space for your logo or team name. You can design your own garments by uploading your logo or team name and placing it on the available garments. Have a go - its fun!
