Welcome to 2008! The ATB team trusts you had an enjoyable and safe holiday. With the hot start to the year, we hope you’ve been able to stay cool and started putting your new year’s resolutions into practice!
Did you get a new bike for Christmas? If so, you are one of 1.47 million people in Australia to have received a bike in 2007. This record making amount means that bikes outsold cars (1.04 million) for the eighth consecutive year.
With more people cycling more often, it’s even more important to stay safe on the roads. To all 2006 and 2007 past participants, please take care when your out riding and we hope this monthly newsletter continues to prepare and motivate you again for the big event this year.
From the ATB Team - Michael, Carolyn, Peter and Jenny

Beach Road Blitz
In response to the increasing popularity of cycling as a recreational pursuit and in particular the rising number of cyclists on Beach Road, a cycling Code of Conduct has been produced.
The Victoria Police, groups representing road cyclists, the Transport Accident Commission and VicRoads were involved in developing the Code of Conduct.
The purpose of this Code of Conduct is to encourage cyclists to ride in a safer manner, to increase their compliance with the road rules and to show more respect for other road users.
The ATB team is also currently working hard on making improvements to the ride and with all participants taking note of the Code of Conduct this will help provide a safe and enjoyable ride for all participants in 2008.
Summer Cycling
The beginning of 2008 has seen plenty of cycling action with the Jayco Bay Cycling Classic showing off some high speed Criterium racing. NSW dominated the series, with Series winners Megan Dunn from Dubbo, and Mark Renshaw from Bathurst.
Olympic hopefuls Oenone Wood of ACT and Victorian Matthew Lloyd are the newly crowned Australian Road Cycling Champions. The Scody Australian Open Road Championships were held on the tough, hilly course at Buninyong, near Ballarat, Victoria. Congratulations also to Victorian Bridie O’Donnell and Adam Hansen of Qld who are the Individual Time Trial Champions.
Goodluck to all those riding in the Audax Alpine Classic on the Australia Day Long weekend. This is one of the toughest non-competitive rides in Australia and travels through some of Victoria's most spectacular countryside.
