This year our focus is to provide you, the riders, with the "ultimate cycling journey". We are working with Councils to have temporary clearways installed in key areas, to sweep the route and to increase traffic control measures. We have secured a new ferry, increased the mechanical support and we have even had your lunch assessed by an Accredited Dietitian!
Your part in the" ultimate cycling journey" is to know the road rules, share the road and be prepared! A comprehensive Ride Guide will be sent to you with your Rider Kits. If that does not answer all of your questions, let us know so we can help you out with all your preparations.
Only 47 days to go - happy training!

Time on the Bike
We hope your training is well underway. Members are following the detailed training advice on fitness2live. You still have time to use the 6-week preparation plan. You need your Bicycle Victoria rider number to log-in (this is not your Bib number).
For non-members, Jimmy & Kane suggest that you should be attempting to spend the following times on the bike:
1. 250km & 210km - at least one ride a week should be up to four hours.
2. 100km - at least one ride a week should be up to two and a half hours.
3. 50km - at least one ride a week should be up to 90 minutes.
If you have any training questions send an email to Jimmy and Kane.
September Key Dates
21 September
Last date for changes to your entry details. Please make absolutely sure your mailing address is correct, otherwise you will miss out on your Rider Kit.
24-28 September
Rider Kits for 250km, 210km and 100km will be mailed out between these dates. (Rider Kits for 50km riders can be collected from Alexandra Gardens from 10am – 2pm on Saturday 20 October.)
Calling Route Marshals
A Route Marshal is Bicycle Victoria’s ears, eyes and voice on the road. Route Marshals watch for any hazards or traffic issues and provide lots of encouragement to the riders along the way.
We are still in need of Route Marshals for within a 25km radius of the Start/Finish Area at Alexandra Gardens, at Sorrento and Queenscliff and some parts in between!
Group training sessions for Route Marshals will be conducted shortly and all marshals will be provided with a uniform and lunch on the day of the event.
If you know of someone who might be interested please get them to send us an email

Postcard from Paris
Last year's winner of The Smith Family's fundraising incentive sent The Smith Family this postcard and wrote: "What a city - two weeks is not enough. Sitting at Montmartre having a glass of wine".
How would you like to be at the final stages of the 2008 Tour de France, dining along the Champs Elysees or standing on top of the Eiffel Tower overlooking one of the world’s most spectacular cities .....? Well you could be!
All riders who raise $210 or more for The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program will go into the draw to win two return economy tickets to Paris to watch the 2008 Tour de France roadside!
If every rider raises $210 for The Smith Family through this year's Portfolio Partners Around the Bay in a Day, not only will they be in the draw to win two return tickets to Paris, but over 4,000 disadvantaged Aussie kids will be given an opportunity for a great start in life!
You can make a difference … start your fundraising today!
Sponsor yourself, family, friend or colleague online and help The Smith Family raise over $500,000 for the first time! For further information including Terms and Conditions for the ‘Win a Trip to Paris’ promo please visit our website.
Travel the distance with the Portfolio Partners Pro Women's Team
In support of our mission to get More Women Cycling More Often, we are providing a friendly and supportive atmosphere to ensure you enjoy your Portfolio Partners Around the Bay in a Day experience and meet your goal of conquering 100kms.
If you are new to cycling or bunch riding, or a little unsure about your ability on two wheels or dealing with a flat tyre, fear no longer! Ride alongside the Portfolio Partners Pro Women’s Team for this year’s Portfolio Partners Around the Bay in a Day - 100km ride distance. Sorry guys, this opportunity is for the girls only.
Cycle along with Australia’s top female cyclists, such as Olivia Gollen and Rochelle Gilmore, as they lead and inspire you on the 100km route from Sorrento to Melbourne and enjoy the company with other like-minded female cyclists who are happy to have a rest and gossip along the way. And in case that flat tyre does occur, you will have en route mechanical support – we won’t leave you behind!
The Portfolio Partners Pro Women’s Team marquee will be available to you all weekend at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour's finish area at King's Domain. Come on down on Saturday 20 October at 1pm to help cheer on Olivia and Rochelle as they compete in the Portfolio Partners Women’s Classic criterium event. Whilst you are there, have a chat to some of local female cycling group leaders who will be on hand to answer any of your cycling questions and to give your bike a ‘once over’ so you are ready to ride the 100km route the following day.

Fundraising Well Under Way...
Hot to trot in this years Portfolio Partners Around the Bay in a Day are the team from Infomedia. The team has already raised over $1,600 for The Smith Family and are off to a flying start in the Highest Fundraising ‘Motor Vehicle’ Team category.
Team Leader Pete Dennis said “we started off by simply sponsoring our own team. Then we thought- why stop there? Let’s sell every little bit of space on our gear to our business colleagues from the motor industry and invite them to ride with us. We now have eight other company logos on our kit and even our landlords have chipped in”.
Role of Honour
Portfolio Partners Around the Bay in a Day is celebrating its 15th year! We want to acknowledge the achievement of riders who have completed the event ten times or more.
We think we know who you are, but if you know of anyone who has completed ten rides, or you have completed ten rides yourself, let us know by Monday 10 September.
Night Riders from Phillip Island
Team Try Hards from Phillip Island report that they are training hard and well.
"We are doing a lot of night riding to break up the training. We need to keep a good look out for rabbits and wallabies on the roads - they always keep you on your toes! Lots of jokes have been told along the way. We are looking forward to the ride this year."
Your Stories
Do you have an interesting story for the media?
Bicycle Victoria is looking for riders who are happy to be contacted by their local newspaper for a photo story to promote the event. It does not matter if you have participated in the Portfolio Partners Around the Bay in a Day before or if you are riding it this year for the very first time.
If you have an interesting anecdote we would love to hear from you. It might be related to your team, fundraising for The Smith Family or just getting ready for the 50km option which goes over Westgate Bridge twice.
Please send us an email with your name and contact details.
